May Book Review

Main protagonist Laurel is a high school student with an assignment to write a letter for her English class. Laurel’s sister May has died at the start of the book but circumstances to her death are not revealed until much later in the book. Laurel’s life is told through her letters to musicians whom her sister loved and who all died tragically young: Curt Cobain, Amy Winehouse, Janis Joplin to name a few. Unable to cope with the loss of her sister, she finds solace in communicating with the dead through her letters. Her typical high school teen challenges are magnified by a mother who abandoned the family after the death of Laurel’s sister, an emotionally closed off father, and a religious aunt. Laurel blames herself for May’s death. Laurel finally opens up regarding the details of her sister’s death, which she was present for and begins to heal with the help of her friends and reuniting with her mother.
